The Use of Subtitle English Cartoon Movie in Developing Speaking Skills Among Senior High School at Madani Super Camp English Course

Abstract

Speaking remains a major challenge for EFL learners due to limited exposure to authentic English input, which leads to difficulties in vocabulary mastery and pronunciation. This research aimed to investigate how the use of English-subtitled cartoon movie improves students' vocabulary and pronunciation as components of speaking skills at Madani Super Camp English Course. This study applied a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles. The subjects were 25 male senior high school students of Grade XI from Nurul Haramain Islamic Boarding School. The data were gathered quantitatively through a speaking pre-test, an immediate post-test, and a delayed post-test to measure long-term retention. To ensure the objectivity of the speaking assessment, an inter-rater reliability method was employed involving the researcher and a collaborator. Furthermore, qualitative data were collected through observation checklists and field notes. The findings revealed a significant improvement in the students' speaking abilities. In the pre-test, the students' mean score was 42.0, with 0% of students achieving the Minimum Mastery Criterion (KKM) of 80. Following the implementation of English-subtitled cartoon movie, which integrated audio-visual context and dialogue explanations, the mean score in the immediate posttest (Cycle 2) increased substantially to 86.40, with an 88% passing rate. The long-term effectiveness was proven by the delayed post-test results, which yielded a stable mean score of 87.00 and maintained the 88% passing rate. Qualitatively, the immersive media successfully reduced students' hesitation, fostered active participation, and enhanced their learning confidence. In conclusion, English-subtitled cartoon movie are highly effective media for developing students' speaking skills, specifically in embedding vocabulary and pronunciation into long-term memory.
